"I would like to start a conversation on the relationship between science and power. By “science” I mean the field of study (trying to figure out how the world works) and the people doing the studying (scientists, and, in an earlier era, priests and philosophers). By “power” I mean the ruling elite and the set of ideas, laws, and structures that allow them to exert control over society. This is just a kernel of an idea that I would like to expand with your help. Here are my initial thoughts:
Science and power have always gone together. It works by a sleight of hand whereby the rulers claim that they are closer to God and their scientific advisors give them legitimacy by being able to predict things in the natural world.
The relationship is fraught. Science needs power to convert ideas into wealth. Power needs science in order to stay in control of the population. But I doubt the two camps like each other very much. They both think of themselves as superior to the other. But one cannot survive without the other so they are stuck in an uneasy marriage throughout history. They are united though in their contempt for the peasants..."

Vorrei iniziare una conversazione sul rapporto tra scienza e potere. Per “scienza” intendo il campo di studio (cercare di capire come funziona il mondo) e le persone che studiano (ricercatori e, in un'era precedente, sacerdoti e filosofi). Per “potere” intendo l’élite dominante e l’insieme di idee, leggi e strutture che consentono loro di esercitare il controllo sulla società. Questo è solo il nocciolo di un'idea che vorrei ampliare con il vostro aiuto. Qui i miei pensieri iniziali:
Scienza e potere hanno sempre proceduto insieme. Funziona con un gioco di prestigio col quale i governanti affermano di essere più vicini a Dio e i loro consulenti scientifici danno loro legittimità essendo in grado di prevedere le cose nel mondo naturale.
Il rapporto è teso. La scienza ha bisogno del potere per convertire le idee in ricchezza. Il potere ha bisogno della scienza per mantenere il controllo della popolazione. Ma dubito che i due schieramenti si piacciano molto. Entrambi si considerano superiori all'altro. Ma l'uno non può sopravvivere senza l'altro, quindi sono impantanati in un matrimonio difficile nel corso della storia. Sono uniti però nel loro disprezzo per i contadini.
